The Rise of Executable Knowledge
Why AI Skills Are Becoming the New White Papers
For years, expertise on the internet followed a familiar path.
Researchers published papers. Practitioners wrote books.
Consultants shared blog posts. Developers contributed code.
Artificial intelligence is creating a new category.
Today, some of the most valuable knowledge is no longer being published as articles or tutorials.
It is being published as Markdown files.
Files with names such as:
· SKILL.md
· AGENT.md
· README.md
· CLAUDE.md
At first glance, they look like documentation.
They are not. They are executable knowledge shared.
Instead of merely explaining an idea, they teach an AI system how to perform a task.
This represents an important shift. A traditional paper describes knowledge.
A Skill packages knowledge into a reusable operational capability.
That distinction matters.
The value is no longer limited to knowing what to do.
The value lies in capturing how an experienced practitioner thinks while performing the work.
In many ways, a Skill resembles a laboratory protocol more than a software program.
It records:
· decision criteria;
· procedural rules;
· quality standards;
· contextual knowledge;
· operational workflows.
Because these artifacts are lightweight, version-controlled, and easily shared, a new form of knowledge exchange is emerging.
Experts increasingly publish Skills openly.
The competitive advantage no longer comes from hiding procedures.
It comes from applying them well within a coherent system.
This mirrors the evolution of open-source software.
Linux did not eliminate software companies. Git did not eliminate engineering teams.
Open protocols expanded the ecosystem while increasing the value of expertise.
Agent Skills appear to be following a similar trajectory.
Interestingly, this movement also blurs the boundary between documentation and execution.
A well-designed Skill is simultaneously:
· documentation;
· institutional memory;
· operational protocol;
· learning resource;
· executable artifact.
In other words, it becomes a portable unit of professional expertise.
As AI systems become collaborators rather than tools, organizations may discover that their most valuable intellectual property is no longer a prompt or even a model.
It is the explicit codification of how their people solve problems.
The future of organizational knowledge may not be another document repository.
It may be a library of executable knowledge.
